With utmost mental strength they could muster, the four representatives of AB Journalism finished second place in the annual Tagisan ng Talino, the flagship event for the Buwan ng Wika.
Arianne Merez of 1JRN1, Kim Naparan of 1JRN2, Lord Bien Lelay of 2JRN2, and Nikka Policarpio of 4JRN2 joined the contest, held at the audio-visual room of the Tan Yan Kee Student Center last September 6.
The Asian Studies team reigned the competition after garnering 23 points, against the Journ team's 18 points and the team from Communication Arts settling for third place with 15 points.
AB Student Council Auditor Henry Villamiel said in an interview with The Journalese that “Tagisan ng Talino aims to test the participants' knowledge of Filipino grammar and the basics of the Filipino language.”
"The questions used in the event were from the Filipino department head himself, Dr. Roberto Ampil, to remove notions of bias and give the competition credibility," he added.
The Faculty of Arts and Letters yearly celebrates the Buwan ng Wika, to promote and honor the national language of the Philippines through activities such as poetry writing, essay writing, public speaking, poster making. There are also quiz bees.
"Masaya naman ako sa narating namin given na wala kaming preparation, although kaya naman naming manalo, nakulangan lang,” Lelay said of their team’s performance.
Although he is not too satisfied, he added, "Sa tingin ko, yung pagsali namin sa contest makakatulong din sa pag-aaral at sa amin mismo kasi Filipino is our national language and it would always be a part of our lives.” J
