The Journalese
Banking on better preparation for the tourney against their inferior foes, the Journalism Society men’s basketball team crushed the Literature Society basketball team in a total team effort to kick off their campaign in the annual Faculty of Arts and Letters Sportsfest.
The Journ team blasted their way to an 86-24 rout of Lit Thursday at the Education playground inside the University of Santo Tomas campus.
Journ came out roaring with a 32-0 first quarter score, and capitalized on the litterateurs' struggles with fast breaks and open lay-ups.
Journalism coach Sherwin Marion Vardeleon saw the opening game as a good start for the squad. "Tingin ko naman, okay yung naging performance ng starting five at saka pati nung bench," he said after seeing the team playing with an almost complete unit for the first time. Sophomore Michael Toledo top scored for the journalists with 16 points, while Luigi Mangaya had 14, team captain Jan Ballesteros, and Rijei Reyes had 10 apiece. After being outscored by the journalists 38-0, Eidrette Victorio finally broke the Literature majors' silence at the 7:10 mark of the second canto, but Thomasian journalists extended the deficit to 34 at the half, 43-9. |
Team effort was the key to the Journ victory as each member of the squad contributed not just on the offensive end, but in defense as well. The Journalese's sports editor Jim Wilson went scoreless in the game but went ballistic in the defensive end, swatting four shots while sporting a Marlou Aquino-like eyeglasses. Journ senior Jaime Campos even doubled as a photographer in-game, and managed to finish with five markers. The Journalese's associate editor Robin Padilla sat the game out. J |
