John Joseph Basijan, 3JRN1
You really can’t have it all, he said. But in this contest, Basijan is determined to prove who has it. The Circle writer at The Varsitarian proudly represents his block in the competition. He said he may not have the “most photogenic looks and the perfect appearance for a pageant” but he is proud of his intellect and voice. |
“I want to prove that sometimes it’s not in the appearance – sometimes it’s in the personality,” Basijan said.
His motto?
“It is our choices that make us who we truly are, far more than our abilities,” he said, quoting the wise wizard Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series.

Gherrylle Ombina, 3JRN1
It did not cross her mind but when tapped to represent her block, she was all for it. “Nagbotohan ‘yung mga blockmates ko, then ‘yon, ako na ang repsentative. Akala ko joke lang pero no’ng nandiyan na, pinandigan ko na lang,” Gherrylle Ombina said and smiled. She is not just another pretty face. Gherylle is not only active in the academe but also in co-curricular activities, such as being a feature writer at TomasinoWeb (TomWeb), the official online-based student publication and organization of the University of Santo Tomas. Her attitude toward life is what she is most proud of. She does not quit easily, especially when she knows that she really wants something. |
When asked what she has that other contestants do not, she answered, “Honestly, I don’t know. Alam ko lahat naman kami may kanya-kanyang personality and I don’t know them personally kaya ‘di ko talaga alam. May mga kaya sila na ‘di ko kaya and vice versa. Basta alam ko sa sarili ko na totoo ako sa mga sinasabi at ginagawa ko.”
People might criticize of her of some things she could not do, but she wants to prove them wrong in this competition.
Her motto is, “If they laugh at you because you are different, laugh at them because they are all the same. Hindi naman kailangan laging go with the flow lalo na kung ‘di mo gusto ‘yung flow. You must have your own stand; stand for your own principles.”

Miguel Capalad, 3JRN2
Spare this guy from the playboy-slash-bad boy stereotype. Capalad instantly said he wants to discredit people who are depicting him as such, when asked what he wants to prove in this competition. Aside from being a class officer, he is also a member of Tomasino Web (TomWeb), the official online-based student publication and organization of the University of Santo Tomas. He might not have joined the contest if left to choose, but he did it for their class. “I joined kasi na-stress na sobra si Jan de Luis (president) sa pagpili. I did this for her,” Capalad said. |
Being a Thomasian makes him the proudest and when asked what other contestants lack, he said, “I think wala ‘yung ibang contestant ng humor ko.”
His belief in destiny inspires him to move forward.
“Go with the flow," Capalad said. "Whatever happens, happens.”

Ashley Dela Peña, 3JRN2
“Just be simple, stay humble and always be true to yourself.” This is what Ashley Dela Peña stands for. She is proud of who she really is and “of what God had made her into what He wanted her to be.” Ashley said, “Everyone is designed to be unique and therefore, though I have not been able to know other candidates yet, there are a lot of things that I may have that they don’t and the same goes for them.” This one does not care about judgment. For her, many people can say negative things about her but it should not bring her down. When asked why she entered the pageant, she jokingly said with a smile, “napilitan.” |
But this shows how selfless she is to join despite academic pressure, only for sake of their class.
Ashley is also a trainee at the AB Chorale, a member of the Wushu Flaming Tigers, and of the University-wide organization, UNICEF. J
